The story of the Sancruary of Montecastello , perching on a cliff fallig sheer to Lake Garda (700mts a.s.l.) , is linked to the memory of a "Star" . Inthe 13th century , during the hard battle between the people of Brescia and the people from Trento , a dashing light came out of the castle , in which a small temple dedicated to the Virgin Mary already exsisted , and paralysed the people of Trento . This enable the troupes from Brescia to easily win over them . The inhabitants of Tignale maintained that it had been the Virgin Mary who appeared on the montain as a lightning Star , hence the name of "Our Lady of the Star " .The lower church , in a Romanesque - Gothic style , contains Renaissance frescoes from the late 15th century . The upper church contains an upper altar in golden wood , and , instead of the altarpiece , it has a window pane , behind which the miraculous image of the Virgin , by unknow author of the 15th cantury , can be admired , while being crowned by Jesus , on her knees , an a humble and supplicant attitude . Four copper medaillons surround the fresco by Palma , representig the Presentation in the Temple , the Annunciation , the Birth and the Visit of the three Kings . Also interesting is the largest votive offering in Italy : a painting from 17th century representing a peculiar troop of soldiers climbing up a montain , behind gigs bristling with guns . It's the battle where the brigand Zuane Zanon ( from which the name Zanzanù) died. He had been deemed invulnerable - according to the inhabitants of this mountains because he could stop bullets with his hands
